Description

Decision making in public health can be influenced by a number of factors including scientific evidence, budgetary opportunities and limitations, institutional norms, and ethical considerations, among other things. Bringing an ethical lens into practice is important for ensuring that the well-being of others (whether individuals or populations) is taken into account when policies, programs and other activities are developed to improve the health of populations.

The purpose of this online course is to help you to develop your skills in perceiving and addressing ethical issues that might arise in public health practice in order to make more ethically-informed decisions.

Learning Objectives

By taking this course, participants will improve their ability to:

  • Describe different ways of looking at the field of public health ethics and relate these to the aims, practices and policies of public health.
  • Apply ethical concepts, frameworks, values and principles.
  • Identify ethical issues that arise in connection with case studies, policies, programs or professional practice.
  • Deliberate to bring ethical values into play to inform decisions about a policy, program or course of action.
  • Find, use and contextualize additional resources in order to add to their knowledge and experience in public health ethics.

Target Audience

The course is intended for practitioners, professionals and decision makers in the health and social services sector (particularly public health), students and instructors in schools of public health, and for any person interested in the ethics of public health.

General Information

This course (which takes about five hours to complete) consists of six modules that include lessons, readings, videos featuring experts and practitioners, quizzes, and practical exercises using case studies.

This course becomes accessible to you 24/7 upon registration. You can progress at your own pace and access the course as often as you wish.

Upon completing the course, you will have the opportunity to request a certificate of completion.
